Before we headed to San Diego, I happened upon a mention of Donut Bar in the downtown area. Reading the hype that it was a favorite of Hollywood celebrities including Steve Harvey and Ellen DeGeneres, I took a look at their online gallery Hands-down it was my goal to have breakfast there one day.
The first day I visited the shop at 631 B St, I walked blocks to find the Sold Out sign handwritten on their door. Since the shop is scheduled to be open from 7:00 a.m. until sold out on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. until sold out on weekends, I wasn’t surprised they were closed by 12:30 p.m. It just made me more determined to eat at a place where a day’s supply of freshly-made donuts ran out that quickly.
A few days later, I returned to Donut Bar at 8:30 a.m. and they were well stocked. I was the fifth person in line and walked back and forth in front of the bakery cases to get a look ahead at what I wanted. As many of the confections were seven- to eight-inches in diameter and about three-inches in height, I knew I was only going to be able choose one so I wanted to maximize my choice.
Caramel Latte Yeast Donut…yum!
There was a large assortment of raised donuts and crullers filled with icing! One donut was called a “Big Poppa Tart” which the woman who waited on me described as a raised jelly donut with icing and decorations on top, baked around an entire Poptart! Whoa…
I chose a caramel latte raised donut. It was so huge, I was not able to pick it up and eat it like a traditional donut. Eating it required a knife and fork, a lot of napkins and a large coffee to wash it down…all for $6.00. The donut was incredibly fresh, light, sticky and gooey. The icing on top drizzled with caramel sauce and dolloped with icing made it the best donut I have ever eaten.
Donut Bar has a location in Terminal 2 of San Diego International Airport, one in Las Vegas, NV, one in Temecula, CA, and one in Scottsdale, AZ. I can definitely say I am glad the only one convenient for me in future is in Vegas when I visit my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter who live there. If Donut Bar was near me, I would have to go often to sample their ever-changing menu options. My waistline would never survive.
